Mongoose did a great job on the fork, looks almost spot on minus those keyed washer holes on the dropouts ( thanks to Ralph Nader for bicycle safety ).They are the smallest carnivores in Africa and are primarily insectivorous (insect-eaters). Then there is the kickstand hole, which was not present on the original bike frame. The gussets on the new bike also look a little different than the 70’s bike, but maybe it’s just the pictures that make it look different. Looks like Mongoose tried hard to replicate the weld pattern but just didn’t make it look authentic 1970’s vintage BMX weld pattern. The newer bikes are not Nickel plated, they are some sort of paint or powder coat. In any case the older Mongoose bikes had a Nickel finish with a “V” pattern weld. I believe it was a Mongoose Motomag, it had a very short top tube.
These pictures are from a late 70’s Mongoose that I sold a while back. Now lets compare an Old School BMX Mongoose frameset to the Stranger Things Mongoose BMX bike. In any case, if you want one of these Netflix Mongoose bikes you need to move fast as the hype is crazy! There are Max BMX Bikes on Ebayas of. Mongoose should have put some sort of metal Rat Trap BMX pedals on the bike, something along the line of the old school KKT. In my opinion the only thing that needs to be changed without even thinking twice would be the resin cheapo pedals. I highly doubt Mongoose will have a replacement padset available.

If I were to remove the pads I would try popping the buttons apart with a small screw driver or something along those lines. Wouldn’t want to pull on the material as it looks like it would tear very easily. That said it would be a very good idea to be extremely carefully while unsnapping the buttons. Now, these pads are very thin material not at all thick like the original Mongoose padset form the 1980’s. The vinyl padset puts it over the top for me, definitely a good move for Mongoose.
Sure, there are some parts that don’t quite belong but for the price I don’t think it’s a deal breaker. It’s a cool ride that looks the part all the way down to the sealed cartridge bearing mags. I’m diggin’ this 3rd Generation Stranger Things Mongoose BMX without a doubt. Have fun, stay safe, and most importantly - Ride on! In my honest opinion it’s a lot of bike for the money, but heavy, and designed for cruising and looking the part, not for riding hard core. From all the bikes I have seen over the last 40+ years, I would definitely say this Mad Max BMX Bike is well worth the retail price, and possibly more if it’s assembled correctly. Unfortunately, taking $220 to your local bike shop will not buy you much, let alone a cool retro Mongoose. Let’s remember, it is a department store bike after all. Those issues aside it’s still a fairly nice build for the price point. Would have been nice to get a small bottle of touch-up paint with the bike, but who am I fooling, those days left us high and dry in the late 1980’s.

The way all the parts where zip tied together and put in the box allowed for the handlebar to rub on the bottom of the sprocket/chain, which chewed up the paint. It’s a bike for kids, remember? Hopefully later production will see this issue with the mags and get it cleaned up, maybe not? The only other issue that I have found so far is the scratched up handlebar.
Mongoose, if you are listening, this extra material is super sharp and definitely not kid friendly. Ouch, they dropped the ball on this one as it’s a liability for them, and has potential to cut someone quite badly. It doesn’t look like quality control (if there is such a department) even bothered to clean up the excess material. Also, the mag wheels are cast aluminum and had some extra material that “ouzed” out of the mold, which left behind some wicked sharp areas. I had to take a file and some sand paper to the inside of the tube as it wouldn’t accept the seatpost without putting huge scratches in the chrome finish. One being the very sharp unfinished seat tube internals. There are a few things I found that I didn’t like. It really is the same quality as most entry level Bike Shop bikes for kids. I’m pleasantly surprised at the build quality of this Mongoose.
